What it is and what it does. Sodium nitrite is the corrosion inhibitor added to alkaline cleaners and to rinse water, and the accelerator used in some phosphating and passivation systems.
- White to pale yellow granules, very soluble; it passivates steel surfaces so they do not flash rust between stages.
- Also used as the accelerator in nitrite-accelerated phosphating and as a colouring assistant in some antiquing baths.
- It is a nitrite: it can form nitrosamines with amines and must never be acidified in the presence of organic matter.
