Rack Plating
Rack Plating Process Guide
The complete technical guide for zipper sliders & hardware — from polishing to final inspection. Built for line operators and plating engineers.
Why Rack Plating for Zipper Sliders & Hardware
Four reasons high-end lines choose rack over barrel
▼
The 10-Step Rack Plating Process
Pretreatment decides 60–80% of final quality — never rush steps 1–7
1Polishing (Hand or Barrel)
Hand polishing for high-end sliders, barrel polishing for standard runs. Remove burrs, die-cast lines and water stains to a mirror base.
Key Parameters
Target roughness: Ra ≤ 0.2 μm
2Wax Removal
Polishing wax left on the surface = blistering after plating. Remove completely with trichloroethylene or ultrasonic degreasing, then dry fully.
Key Parameters
Method: Solvent / Ultrasonic
Time: 5–10 min
3Racking
Hang parts on dedicated fixtures — firm electrical contact, no part-to-part contact, no shielding. Bad racking = bare patches and rack marks.
4Sulfuric Acid Degreasing
Chemical cut of residual oil and wax. Alternative: ultrasonic wax removal for complex puller cavities.
Key Parameters
H₂SO₄: 10–15%
Temp: 60–70 °C
Time: 3–5 min
5Multi-Stage Rinsing
3 counter-current rinse 6 ultrasonic rinse 2 final rinse. Drag-out control here protects every downstream bath.
6Electrolytic Degreasing
Electro-cleaning reaches holes, gaps and hinge joints that chemicals miss. Mandatory for assembled sliders.
Key Parameters
Current density: 2–5 A/dm²
Temp: 50–60 °C
Time: 2–3 min
7Acid Activation
Strip the passive film on zinc alloy so the strike layer bonds. Fresh activation = adhesion.
Key Parameters
Formula: 85 L water + 15 L H₂SO₄
Time: 30–60 s
8Plating (Cu Ni Color)
Alkaline copper strike acid copper build (leveling) bright nickel color bath. Each stage timed to spec.
Key Parameters
Nickel pH: 4.2–4.6
Temp: 50–55 °C
Current: 1–3 A/dm²
9Recovery Rinse
Drag-out recovery returns precious metal to the bath, cuts chemical cost and keeps discharge compliant.
10Unracking & 100% Inspection
Visual check under D65 light, XRF thickness verification per batch, adhesion cross-cut sampling.
Key Parameters
Thickness check: XRF
Adhesion: ISO 2409 cross-cut

Troubleshooting — Fast Diagnosis
The four defects that cause 90% of rejects
| Defect | Most Likely Cause | Fix On Line |
|---|---|---|
| Blistering / peeling | Wax or oil left in pretreatment | Re-check step 2 & 4; extend ultrasonic time |
| Bare patches / skips | Poor rack contact or shielding | Re-rack; file contact tips |
| Color mismatch batch-to-batch | Bath temp/pH drift | Log pH & temp every 2 h; target ΔE ≤ 1.0 |
| Rough / burnt deposit | Current density too high | Drop to 1–3 A/dm² window; check anode bags |
⚠ Never skip activation on zinc alloyZinc re-passivates within minutes in air. Parts must enter the strike bath within 30 seconds of activation rinse — delayed transfer is the number one hidden cause of peeling 2 weeks after delivery.
FAQ
Straight answers from the plating line
What is your MOQ for rack plating?
1000 pcs per color. Trial runs from 200 pcs are welcome so you can verify color and adhesion before scaling.
Lead time?
5–7 working days standard, 3–4 days expedited. Custom color development adds 7–10 days.
Do you provide test reports?
Yes — XRF thickness, cross-cut adhesion, and third-party salt spray (24–96 h) reports on request.
Can you match our brand Pantone?
Yes, ΔE ≤ 1.0 with spectrophotometer verification. Custom colors need 3000+ pcs.
Nickel vs nickel-free?
EU-bound or skin-contact products: nickel-free (REACH). Everything else: bright nickel is cheaper and brighter.

One-Stop Line Supply — Common Buyer Questions
Can you supply the whole line — equipment, chemicals, polishing compounds, paints and technical support?
Yes. QLQ delivers the complete turnkey package for zipper and hardware factories: rack & barrel plating equipment, plating chemicals and additives, polishing and grinding compounds, paints, varnishes and protective coatings, plus line upgrade and on-site technical support. See the full catalog on our turnkey surface treatment line page.
Do you also supply polishing paste, grinding compound and buffing compound for pre-treatment?
Yes. Pre-treatment polishing compounds are part of the QLQ one-stop package — matched to your metal type and plating process for consistent surface quality before plating or painting.
Can you upgrade our existing plating or painting line instead of building a new one?
Yes. QLQ provides line upgrade and retrofit services: new tanks, automation upgrades, drying systems and process optimization for existing lines, with on-site commissioning and operator training.
