What it is and what it does. Copper sulfate pentahydrate is the main copper source of the acid copper plating bath and of copper pyrophosphate make-up. Dissolved with sulfuric acid it forms the electrolyte that deposits the bright, ductile copper layer used under nickel and chrome on zipper sliders, buttons and bag hardware.
- Deep blue crystals; the pentahydrate carries about 25% copper by weight, so 4 kg of salt give roughly 1 kg of copper metal.
- This is the plating grade material: iron, zinc and organic matter are controlled because they co-deposit and dull the deposit.
- Also used as the copper source for the pyrophosphate and cyanide copper baths.
