Special color by rack plating
This is the "Rack Plating Antique & Vintage Finishes Operations Manual".
Rack vs. Barrel:
Barrel Antique: Uses tumbling stones to randomly remove the black layer. It looks "Stonewashed."
Rack Antique: Uses Brushing Wheels (Scotch-Brite, Brass Wire) or Hand Sanding. It creates directional "Hairline" scratches and precise High-Light/Shadow contrast. It is the standard for luxury belt buckles and bag locks.
Here is the Master’s Standard for the Rack Antique Department using the [QLQ System].
🕰️ Rack Antique & Vintage Finishes Manual (The "Hand-Crafted" Look)
Target: Luxury Belt Buckles, Handbag Locks, Logo Plates.
Goal: "Oil-Rubbed Bronze," "Brushed Antique Brass," "Distressed Silver."
Process: Thick Plating $\rightarrow$ Oxidation $\rightarrow$ Mechanical Relieving (Brushing) $\rightarrow$ Lacquering.
Part I: The Foundation (Thick Plating)
The Golden Rule: You are about to grind the surface with a sanding wheel. If the plating is thin, you will cut through to the white Zinc Alloy instantly.
Standard Copper/Brass Thickness: > 15 Microns.
The "Velvet" Base:
Do not use "Mirror Bright" Acid Copper. It is too slippery for the oxide to stick.
Use Semi-Bright or Velvet Copper (Low Brightener, High Leveler). This provides "Tooth" for the blackener to grip.
Part II: The Oxidation Chemistry (The "Living" Finish)
Rack parts are dipped manually. Timing is everything.
1. Antique Brass / Copper (Browns & Blacks)
Chemical: [QLQ] Sulfide Oxidizer 10X.
Concentration: 10 – 15 ml/L.
Temperature: Room Temp (25°C). Never heat it, or the reaction becomes too fast to control.
SOP:
Dip rack in Oxidizer.
Watch color shift: Yellow $\rightarrow$ Light Brown $\rightarrow$ Purple $\rightarrow$ Chocolate/Black.
Stop immediately when color reaches dark chocolate.
Rinse in Cold Water $\rightarrow$ Hot Water (to dry fast).
2. Antique Silver / Pewter (Greys & Blacks)
Chemical: [QLQ] Cold Blackener (Selenium).
Concentration: 15 – 20%.
Reaction: Instant blackening (5–10 seconds).
Note: Creates a hard, adherent black film that polishes to a "Gunmetal" shine.
3. Black Nickel (The "Gun" Base)
Instead of oxidizing, some factories plate a flash layer of Black Nickel.
Advantage: More consistent color.
Disadvantage: Harder to brush off (Need stiffer wheels).
Part III: The Relieving Process (The "Art" of Brushing)
This is the most critical step. The "Brushing Master" defines the look.
1. Equipment Setup
Lathe/Polishing Motor: Variable Speed (1000 – 1800 RPM).
Wheels:
Scotch-Brite (SB) Wheel: For "Satin" or "Hairline" finish. (Grades: 5S / 7S / 9S).
Brass Wire Wheel: For "Burnished" or "glossy antique" look.
Nylon Wheel: For gentle, subtle relieving.
2. The Brushing Techniques (SOP)
Style A: "Straight Line" Antique (Hairline)
Wheel: SB Wheel (Medium Density).
Technique: Hold the buckle firm. Pull it across the wheel in one continuous straight motion.
Effect: Creates long, straight scratches. The top is bright copper; the deep recesses remain black.
Style B: "Oil-Rubbed" (Cloudy)
Wheel: Loose Cotton Wheel + [QLQ] Pumice Paste.
Technique: "Wet Brushing." The abrasive paste gently wipes away the black oxide without creating scratch lines.
Effect: A soft, glowing "Old World" look with no directional lines.
Style C: "Distressed" (Random)
Wheel: Brass Wire Wheel (Low Speed).
Technique: Dab the part against the wheel at different angles.
Effect: Looks beat-up and vintage.
Part IV: Post-Treatment (Locking the Color)
Antique surfaces are "raw" and active. They will rot (turn green/spotted) in 24 hours if not sealed.
1. The Sealer Choice
Spray Lacquer (Matte/Satin):
Preferred: [QLQ] 2K Matte Acrylic.
Why? High-Gloss lacquer makes antique finishes look like cheap plastic. Matte lacquer makes them look like real metal.
Electrophoretic Lacquer (E-Coat):
Best for: Complex shapes with deep recesses.
Color: Use "Clear Matte" E-Coat.
2. The "Tinted" Lacquer Trick
Sometimes the brushing makes the copper look "too pink" or raw.
Master's Fix: Add 2% [QLQ] Brown Dye or Yellow Dye into the clear lacquer.
Result: This "Toner" blends the bright copper lines with the black background, creating a rich "Coffee Bronze" tone.
Part V: Master’s Troubleshooting (Rack Specific)

Part VI: Efficiency & Process Control
1. The "Wet vs. Dry" Decision
Dry Brushing: Faster, cleaner, creates sharp lines. Dust extraction required.
Wet Brushing: Slower, messier, but creates smoother/softer finishes. Better for "High Luxury" items.
2. Wheel Management
Cost Control: SB Wheels wear down.
Tip: As the wheel gets smaller, the Surface Speed (SFPM) drops. You must increase RPM to maintain the same finish consistency.
3. The "Dummy" Standard
SOP: Every morning, the Brushing Master must produce a "Golden Sample."
All operators must match their output to this sample every hour. Antique finishing is subjective; eyes drift without a reference.
