This is the "Silver Jewelry Direct Real Gold Plating Manual".
The Challenge: Silver (Ag) is a troublesome substrate.
Migration: Silver atoms move very fast. They migrate into the Gold layer, causing the gold to fade to a pale greenish-white color within months if the gold is too thin.
Tarnish: Silver oxidizes/sulfides instantly. If you plate over a tarnished surface, the gold will peel.
Softness: Silver scratches easily. You cannot use harsh Anodic cleaning or high-pressure sandblasting.
The "Vermeil" Standard: In the USA/Europe, to call it "Gold Vermeil," the base must be Sterling Silver, and the Gold thickness must be > 2.5 Microns.
Here is the Master’s Standard for running a Silver line using the [QLQ System].
💍 Rack Plating on Silver Manual (Vermeil & Jewelry)
Target: 925 Sterling Silver Rings, Earrings, Chains.
Goal: High-End "Vermeil" (2.5µm) or Fashion Flash (0.5µm).
Process: Direct Gold (No Nickel) or Palladium-Barrier Gold.
Part I: Silver Pre-Treatment (The "Gentle" Clean)
Silver is soft. Standard steel cleaning destroys the high polish.
Step 1: Ultrasonic Dewaxing
Chemical: [QLQ] Jewelry Cleaner (Mild Alkaline).
Temp: 60°C.
Time: 2-3 mins.
Note: Do not use strong Caustic Soda. It dulls the silver luster.
Step 2: Cathodic Electro-Cleaning (No Anodic!)
Rule: NEVER use Anodic (+) cleaning on Silver. The surface will turn black/grey (Silver Oxide) instantly.
Setup: Rack = Negative (-).
Chemical: [QLQ] Silver E-Clean Salt.
Voltage: 4V - 6V.
Time: 30 - 60 seconds.
Step 3: Acid Activation
Chemical: [QLQ] Acid Salt (Fluoride Free) or 5% Sulfuric Acid.
Avoid: Hydrochloric Acid (HCl). It forms Silver Chloride (White film) that ruins adhesion.
Visual: Surface must be "Water Break Free" and bright white.
Part II: The "Gold Strike" (The Adhesion Anchor)
You cannot plate Thick Gold directly onto Silver. You need a "Strike" to glue it down.
Tank Formulation (100 Liters):

For Silver, we recommend the Acid Hard Gold system (Cobalt Alloy).

Part IV: The "Barrier" Decision (Master's Advice)
Direct Gold on Silver is risky.
Option A: Direct Gold (The "Natural" Way)
Process: Silver $\rightarrow$ Gold Strike $\rightarrow$ Thick Gold.
Risk: Diffusion. Silver atoms migrate into the gold.
Result: In 6 months, the gold turns "Pale Greenish."
Requirement: Minimum Gold thickness > 1.0 Micron to delay diffusion.
Option B: Palladium Barrier (The "Luxury" Way)
Process: Silver $\rightarrow$ Palladium (0.3µm) $\rightarrow$ Gold.
Benefit: Palladium stops migration 100%. It is hypoallergenic (Nickel-Free).
Result: The gold color stays rich forever, even if the gold layer is thin (0.1µm).
Recommendation: For high-end brands, always use Palladium.
Part V: Operations Workflow (SOP)
Racking: Use Copper wire or Stainless Steel tips (Rubber coated).
Ultrasonic Clean: Remove polishing paste.
Cathodic Clean: Remove oil film.
Acid Dip: 5% Sulfuric.
DI Rinse: Pure water.
Palladium Plate (Optional but Recommended): 2 mins.
Gold Strike: 15 seconds (High Voltage).

Issue: 2.5 microns is thick.
Cost: A standard ring might take $3.00 - $5.00 of gold metal.
Action: You must use an Ampere-Minute Meter connected to a Dosing Pump.
Formula: Add [QLQ] Gold Replenisher every 1 Amp-Hour automatically. If you rely on manual addition, you will over-plate (loss) or under-plate (reject).
2. Anti-Tarnish (Post-Dip)
Problem: Even gold-plated silver can tarnish through pinholes.
