What it is and what it does. Nickel chloride hexahydrate provides both nickel and chloride to the Watts nickel bath. It is the standard way to maintain the chloride level so that the anodes dissolve evenly and the deposit keeps its brightness.
- Green crystals containing about 24.7% nickel; the chloride ion activates the nickel anode.
- Too little chloride gives anode polarisation and pitting; too much gives stress and dark edges.
- Normally used together with 250-300 g/L nickel sulfate and 40-50 g/L boric acid.
Typical Use in a Plating / Finishing Line
| Item | Typical guidance |
|---|---|
| Watts nickel bath | 40-60 g/L NiCl2.6H2O |
| Alternative make-up | Some bath formulations use only nickel chloride and boric acid |
| Analysis | Chloride by titration with silver nitrate; nickel by EDTA |
Safety, Handling & Storage
| Item | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Hazard classification | Skin sensitiser + respiratory sensitiser (GHS08) — nickel compounds are suspected carcinogens on inhalation |
| Personal protective equipment | Nitrile gloves, goggles, P2/P3 dust mask and coverall when handling powder; keep the work area dust-free |
| Spill / first aid | Sweep dry and drum for recovery; nickel-bearing rinse water must go to the effluent treatment plant, not to drains |
| Storage | Dry, sealed store; keep the bags closed, label clearly, and keep MSDS for nickel compounds with the batch record |
| Transport | Classified and packed according to IATA/IMDG for the hazard class; UN number and packing group stated on the shipping documents |

Buyer Questions We Answer Every Week
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Which is cheaper, adding nickel chloride or nickel sulfate plus sodium chloride? | Nickel chloride is normally used because it raises nickel and chloride together and keeps the bath balanced. |
| Does the chloride cause corrosion of the tank? | Yes - chloride baths require titanium or coated tanks and suitable anode bags. |

Specifying Nickel Chloride for your line
Chemical fit is decided by the bath, not by the label. Send these four items and we confirm the operating window before you buy.
- Current bath: supplier, TDS and working concentration.
- Process: rack or barrel, temperature, current density.
- Substrate: zinc alloy, steel, brass or ABS.
- Complaint: the defect you are trying to solve, with photos.
| What you send | What you get back |
|---|---|
| Part drawing or sample | Compatibility check and recommended settings |
| Output target per shift | Capacity, tank or rack count, manpower |
| Finish spec with tolerance | Control points and acceptance tests |
| Site conditions (power, water, space) | Layout proposal and utility requirements |
Buying questions we answer most
Is the SDS available before we order?
Yes. SDS and COA are issued per lot. Tell us the destination country so the SDS is supplied in the required format and language.
Can we get a trial quantity first?
Yes. Trial packs are quoted separately and shipped with the analytical method, so your lab can verify the material against the current bath before switching.
What packing and shelf life should we expect?
Standard export packing in drums or jerry cans with inner liner. Shelf life depends on the product - typically 12 months in a closed container, stored away from heat and direct sunlight.
How is it shipped - is it dangerous goods?
Some products are classed as dangerous goods and need the correct UN packing and documentation. We confirm the classification and the shipping route before quoting freight.
Can you match a competitor's additive?
Send the TDS and a bath sample. We compare the operating window and analytical method, then run a Hull cell panel before recommending a replacement.
