What it is and what it does. Cuprous cyanide is the copper source of the cyanide copper bath, used mainly for the strike layer on zinc die castings before bright acid copper or nickel.

  • White to off-white powder, practically insoluble in water but soluble in excess sodium cyanide.
  • Gives the thin, adherent copper strike that allows subsequent acid copper to be plated on die-cast hardware.
  • As a cyanide compound it is toxic and releases hydrogen cyanide if acidified - never store near acids.

Typical Use in a Plating / Finishing Line

ItemTypical guidance
Copper strike bath30-60 g/L CuCN with 40-80 g/L NaCN, free cyanide 5-10 g/L
Operating temperature40-60 C
Cathode current density1-3 A/dm2 for the strike; higher for the plating bath

Safety, Handling & Storage

ItemRequirement
Hazard classificationAcute toxicity (GHS06) + aquatic hazard — releases hydrogen cyanide with acids
Personal protective equipmentFull-face respirator with appropriate cartridge, nitrile gloves, coverall; work only with ventilation and never alone
Spill / first aidNever acidify. Contain with alkaline hypochlorite solution under trained supervision, then treat as hazardous waste
StorageLocked, dry, ventilated store, strictly segregated from ALL acids; cyanide and acid must never share a store or a spill tray
TransportClassified and packed according to IATA/IMDG for the hazard class; UN number and packing group stated on the shipping documents

Buyer Questions We Answer Every Week

QuestionAnswer
What is the free cyanide target?Typically 5-10 g/L for a strike, higher for a plating bath; it is measured by silver nitrate titration.
How is the copper analysed?By iodometric or EDTA titration after destruction of the cyanide complex.

Specifying Cuprous Cyanide for your line

Chemical fit is decided by the bath, not by the label. Send these four items and we confirm the operating window before you buy.

  • Current bath: supplier, TDS and working concentration.
  • Process: rack or barrel, temperature, current density.
  • Substrate: zinc alloy, steel, brass or ABS.
  • Complaint: the defect you are trying to solve, with photos.

Buying questions we answer most

Is the SDS available before we order?

Yes. SDS and COA are issued per lot. Tell us the destination country so the SDS is supplied in the required format and language.

Can we get a trial quantity first?

Yes. Trial packs are quoted separately and shipped with the analytical method, so your lab can verify the material against the current bath before switching.

What packing and shelf life should we expect?

Standard export packing in drums or jerry cans with inner liner. Shelf life depends on the product - typically 12 months in a closed container, stored away from heat and direct sunlight.

How is it shipped - is it dangerous goods?

Some products are classed as dangerous goods and need the correct UN packing and documentation. We confirm the classification and the shipping route before quoting freight.

Can you match a competitor's additive?

Send the TDS and a bath sample. We compare the operating window and analytical method, then run a Hull cell panel before recommending a replacement.
