What it is and what it does. Hydrochloric acid is the pickling and activation acid of the plating line - it removes rust and scale from steel and activates nickel, zinc and steel surfaces immediately before plating.
- Supplied as a 31-33% solution; the industrial grade has a pale yellow tint from traces of iron, which does not affect pickling.
- It is the acid normally used for the acid dip between the alkaline clean and the plating tank, at 5-10% at room temperature.
- Chloride carry-over into the nickel tank causes pitting, so the rinse after the acid dip must be effective.
Typical Use in a Plating / Finishing Line
| Item | Typical guidance |
|---|---|
| Acid dip / activation | 5-10% v/v at room temperature for 30-60 seconds |
| Steel pickling | 15-30% at room temperature with an inhibitor |
| Analysis | Titration with sodium hydroxide; iron by titration or AAS |
Safety, Handling & Storage
| Item | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Hazard classification | Corrosive (GHS05) — causes severe skin burns and eye damage |
| Personal protective equipment | Face shield + chemical goggles, acid-resistant gloves (nitrile/PVC), rubber apron and boots; local exhaust ventilation |
| Spill / first aid | Neutralise carefully with sodium carbonate or lime, then collect with inert absorbent; never add water to the concentrate |
| Storage | Store in original HDPE/PP containers, upright, in a cool ventilated area away from alkalis, cyanides, oxidisers and metals; bunded floor recommended |
| Transport | Classified and packed according to IATA/IMDG for the hazard class; UN number and packing group stated on the shipping documents |

Buyer Questions We Answer Every Week
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Why does the pickling rate slow down? | Iron build-up and acid depletion; dump part of the bath and replenish when the iron exceeds the working limit. |
| Which inhibitor should I use? | A pickling inhibitor designed for hydrochloric acid; it also reduces the hydrogen embrittlement risk on high-strength steel. |

Specifying Hydrochloric Acid for your line
Chemical fit is decided by the bath, not by the label. Send these four items and we confirm the operating window before you buy.
- Current bath: supplier, TDS and working concentration.
- Process: rack or barrel, temperature, current density.
- Substrate: zinc alloy, steel, brass or ABS.
- Complaint: the defect you are trying to solve, with photos.
| What you send | What you get back |
|---|---|
| Part drawing or sample | Compatibility check and recommended settings |
| Output target per shift | Capacity, tank or rack count, manpower |
| Finish spec with tolerance | Control points and acceptance tests |
| Site conditions (power, water, space) | Layout proposal and utility requirements |
Buying questions we answer most
Is the SDS available before we order?
Yes. SDS and COA are issued per lot. Tell us the destination country so the SDS is supplied in the required format and language.
Can we get a trial quantity first?
Yes. Trial packs are quoted separately and shipped with the analytical method, so your lab can verify the material against the current bath before switching.
What packing and shelf life should we expect?
Standard export packing in drums or jerry cans with inner liner. Shelf life depends on the product - typically 12 months in a closed container, stored away from heat and direct sunlight.
How is it shipped - is it dangerous goods?
Some products are classed as dangerous goods and need the correct UN packing and documentation. We confirm the classification and the shipping route before quoting freight.
Can you match a competitor's additive?
Send the TDS and a bath sample. We compare the operating window and analytical method, then run a Hull cell panel before recommending a replacement.
