What it is and what it does. Hydrofluoric acid is used to etch and brighten aluminium, to activate titanium and to remove silicate and sand-type soils. It is also the fluoride source of some aluminium pretreatment and de-oxidising baths.
- Colourless fuming liquid, usually supplied as 55% or 70%; it dissolves glass, which is why plastic and PTFE equipment is used.
- Its burns are delayed and extremely painful, and the fluoride ion attacks calcium in the body - this is the one acid that requires special first aid provisions.
- Storage and dosing must be in HDPE or PTFE, never in glass.
