What it is and what it does. Oxalic acid is the classic iron-removal and derusting acid, used to strip rust and heat scale from steel, to remove iron staining from plating racks, and in the colouring of stainless and aluminium surfaces.
- White crystals; a strong organic acid for its class, and a serious poison - it binds calcium in the body.
- Used at 5-10% in water at 40-70 C for derusting; an inhibitor is added when the base metal must be protected.
- Its iron complex is light-sensitive, which is why bath life is limited.
