What it is and what it does. Hydrochloric acid is the pickling and activation acid of the plating line - it removes rust and scale from steel and activates nickel, zinc and steel surfaces immediately before plating.
- Supplied as a 31-33% solution; the industrial grade has a pale yellow tint from traces of iron, which does not affect pickling.
- It is the acid normally used for the acid dip between the alkaline clean and the plating tank, at 5-10% at room temperature.
- Chloride carry-over into the nickel tank causes pitting, so the rinse after the acid dip must be effective.
