What it is and what it does. Nitric acid is used for passivation of stainless steel, for bright dipping of copper alloys, for stripping nickel and copper from racks and for the treatment of aluminium before plating.
- Colourless to pale yellow fuming liquid, normally 68%; a strong oxidiser.
- Passivation is done at 20-25% at room temperature for 20-30 minutes, followed by a thorough rinse.
- It releases toxic nitrogen dioxide fumes with metals - never use it without extraction.
