What it is and what it does. Black nickel solution (black crystal) is the colouring system that produces the deep black, slightly glossy nickel finish used on decorative zipper sliders and designer bag hardware.
- Dark violet to black clear liquid; the black colour comes from a zinc-nickel co-deposit with a controlled additive package.
- Black nickel deposits are harder and more wear resistant that most antiquing films, but they are thin and need a protective topcoat for outdoor use.
- The bath needs close control of the metal ratio and of the addition agents to keep the tone stable.
