What it is and what it does. Selenium dioxide is the additive that produces the blue-black colour of the black chromate conversion coating on zinc and the dark tones of some antiquing finishes.
- White to pale yellow crystalline powder, soluble in water; used at low concentration in the chromate bath.
- It is a selenium compound and is toxic - dust control and closed handling are essential.
- Overdosing shifts the colour from blue-black towards a lighter grey or brown.
