What it is and what it does. Sodium stannate is the tin source of the alkaline tin plating bath, used for tin coatings on hardware that has to be solderable and on steel that must resist corrosion.
- White powder that dissolves in sodium hydroxide to give the alkaline stannate electrolyte.
- The alkaline bath throws well into recesses and gives a matte to bright tin layer; it is far less corrosive to steel racks than acid tin.
- Carbonate builds up in the bath and is removed by chilling or by carbonate precipitation.
