What it is and what it does. Ammonium fluoride is used in aluminium and zinc die-casting pretreatment, in the activation step before plating, and in etching formulations where a fluoride attack is needed.
- White crystals, soluble in water; it gives ammonium and fluoride ions in solution.
- Fluoride attacks glass and glazes and dissolves aluminium oxide, which is why it is used on aluminium parts.
- Never mix with strong acids: hydrogen fluoride vapour is released.
