What it is and what it does. Phosphoric acid is the acid of the phosphating process and the base of many derusting and deoxidising formulations. It converts a steel surface into a phosphate film that anchors paint and improves corrosion resistance.
- Supplied as an 85% clear syrupy liquid; as a mineral acid it is comparatively mild, so it attacks scale less aggressively than hydrochloric or sulfuric acid.
- On steel it forms a phosphate layer that is a far better paint base than a bare surface.
- Also used as a pH adjuster and as the acid component of aluminium brightening baths.
