What it is and what it does. Nickel chloride hexahydrate provides both nickel and chloride to the Watts nickel bath. It is the standard way to maintain the chloride level so that the anodes dissolve evenly and the deposit keeps its brightness.
- Green crystals containing about 24.7% nickel; the chloride ion activates the nickel anode.
- Too little chloride gives anode polarisation and pitting; too much gives stress and dark edges.
- Normally used together with 250-300 g/L nickel sulfate and 40-50 g/L boric acid.
