What it is and what it does. Ethanol is the solvent and cleaning alcohol used to degrease and dry small parts, to clean optical and electronic components and as a carrier for some surface treatment formulations.
- Colourless clear volatile liquid; the industrial grades are 95% or 99% and are often denatured.
- Evaporates cleanly and leaves no residue, which is why it is used in precision cleaning and in drying aids.
- Highly flammable - a flash point of about 13 C means all ignition sources must be controlled.
