Automatic Polishing Machine Operations Manual

🔄 Part I: Machine Selection Strategy (Which machine for what?)

1 The Rotary Transfer Machine (The "Octopus")

Description

A round table that spins. Small "Satellite" spindles hold the parts and spin them against stationary buffing heads.

Best For

Zipper Pulls, Buttons, Rivets. Small, round, or symmetrical items.

Why? High speed. It can hit the part from 360 degrees.

2 The Reciprocating Machine (The "Flat Bed")

Description

A long table moves Left $\leftrightarrow$ Right under wide polishing rolls.

Best For

Long Logo Plates, Flat Belt Buckles, Bag Chains.

Why? It creates perfectly straight polishing lines (Hairline) or flat mirror finishes without rounding the edges.

Decision Rule for Zipper Pulls

Use Rotary Machine for 90% of zipper pulls (Step 1 Cut + Step 2 Color).

Use Reciprocating Machine ONLY if the puller is a long, flat bar design that needs to be perfectly flat.

⚙️ Part II: Rotary Machine Operations (The Workhorse)

Step 1: The Jig Setup (The "Claw")

The Hazard: If the part is loose, it becomes a bullet.

The Fix: Use [QLQ] Auto-Lock Jigs.

Operation:

Operator loads the puller onto the pin.

The machine rotates. An air cylinder automatically clamps the part down.

Check: Ensure the "Nose" of the zipper pull is hidden inside the jig to prevent it from being polished flat.

Step 2: Wheel Configuration (The Station Logic)

A typical rotary machine has 4-6 heads.

Station 1 & 2 (Rough Cut):

Wheel: [QLQ] Red-Dip Sisal Wheel.

Speed: 2400 RPM.

Angle: 45° to the part.

Compound: [QLQ] Purple Liquid Compound.

Station 3 & 4 (Fine Cut):

Wheel: Hard Cotton Wheel (Stitched).

Station 5 & 6 (Final Color):

Wheel: Soft Cotton Wheel (Loose).

Speed: 1800 RPM. (Slower to prevent clouding).

Compound: [QLQ] White Liquid Compound.

Step 3: Pressure Control (The "Amp" Meter)

Manual: You feel the pressure.

Auto: You watch the Ampere Meter.

Standard: When the wheel touches the part, the motor load should rise by 2 - 3 Amps.

Too Low: Wheel is not touching.

Too High: You are burning the Zinc and wearing out the wheel. Adjust the wheel head UP.

📏 Part III: Reciprocating Machine Operations (The Flat Finisher)

Step 1: The "Tray" Loading

Fixture: A long Bakelite board with cutouts for the parts.

Loading: Place 20-50 logo plates into the tray.

Vacuum Hold: Advanced machines use vacuum suction to hold plates without clamps.

Step 2: The "Mush" Buffing

Technique: The table moves the parts under the wheels.

Pass 1: Table moves Left. Wheels spin Forward. (Cut).

Pass 2: Table moves Right. Wheels spin Reverse. (Color).

Wheel Choice: Wide [QLQ] Air-Flow Cotton Buffs. These are puckered to allow air cooling, preventing the flat plates from warping due to heat.

Step 3: Edge Protection

Risk: The wheel hits the leading edge of the plate and rounds it off.

Fix: Install "Dummy Bars" on the fixture at the front and back. The wheel hits the dummy bar first, jumps over the gap, and lands gently on the product.

🔫 Part IV: Automatic Waxing (The Liquid Revolution)

Auto machines spin too fast for solid wax bars. We use Liquid Compound.

1 The High-Pressure Gun

Equipment: [QLQ] Spray Gun System.

Position: Aim the gun at the wheel face, not the part. Distance: 5-8cm.

Timing: Short bursts.

Setting: Spray 0.5 seconds. Pause 5 seconds.

Visual Check: The wheel should look "Damp" but not wet. If wax is dripping off the guard, you are wasting money.

2 Solid Bar Feeders (Old School)

If you must use solid bars:

Mechanism: An air cylinder pushes the [QLQ] Purple Bar into the back of the wheel.

Risk: The bar gets hot and crumbles.

Maintenance: Clean the feeder tube daily. Old wax glues the bar stuck.

👨‍🏫 Part V: Master's Experience & Troubleshooting

1 The "Wheel Wear" Compensation

Problem: As the wheel polishes, it gets smaller. After 1 hour, it doesn't touch the part anymore.

Auto-Compensation: Modern machines have sensors to lower the head automatically.

Manual-Compensation: Every 30 minutes, the operator must check the Amp Meter. If Amps drop, turn the hand-wheel down 2 turns.

2 The "Dead Zone"

Problem: The center of a zipper pull is polished, but the sides are dull.

Cause: The Jig is shadowing the sides.

Fix:

Adjust the Spindle Rotation. The part itself must spin while the main table rotates.

Change the Wheel Angle. Tilt the head to 30° to attack the side profile.

3 Fire Safety (Zinc Dust)

Hazard: Zinc dust + Cotton lint + Heat = Fire.

Action:

Clean the dust extraction ducts Daily.

Install [QLQ] Spark Detection Sensors in the duct.

NEVER smoke near the auto-polishing machine.

4 The "Fixture Mark"

Problem: An unpolished line where the clamp held the part.

Fix:

Double Pass: Polish the part, then send it to a manual operator to "touch up" the clamp mark.

Vacuum Jig: Use vacuum suction instead of mechanical clamps (only for Reciprocating).

Final Word from the Master

"The machine is faster than a human, but it is stupid. It will polish a reject part just as happily as a good part.

The Operator's Job is not to polish; it is to Feed the machine good parts and Listen to the machine's sound. A happy machine hums; an unhappy machine screams."
