What it is and what it does. Chromium trioxide (chromic acid) is the electrolyte of the chrome plating bath - both decorative chrome over nickel and hard chrome for wear resistance.
- Dark red to purple flakes, extremely soluble and strongly oxidising.
- Decorative chrome runs at 150-250 g/L with a small amount of sulfate as catalyst; hard chrome at 180-250 g/L with a much higher current density.
- Uniquely, chromium is plated from a solution in which the metal is not the main constituent - the anodes are lead alloys and the metal is supplied by the chromic acid itself.
