The 4-Stage Hand Polishing Process

Each grit transition must be 100% complete — skipping = visible scratches under plating

1Rough Grinding (80–120 Grit)

Remove die-cast parting lines, burrs, and heavy surface defects. Coarse silicon carbide belts or wheels — fast stock removal, 2–3 passes per part.

Key Parameters
Grit range: 80–120
Stock removal: 0.1–0.3 mm/pass

2Medium Grinding (240–400 Grit)

Transition from heavy removal to fine surface conditioning. 240 grit removes 80-grit scratches; 400 grit prepares for polishing. No visible scratch lines remain.

Key Parameters
Grit sequence: 240 → 320 → 400
Speed: 1800–2400 RPM

3Fine Grinding (600–1000 Grit)

Wet sanding step to eliminate micro-scratches and create a satin base. 600→800→1000 grit sequence, each perpendicular to the last for cross-hatch elimination.

Key Parameters
Grit range: 600–1000
Method: Wet sanding
Base roughness: Ra 0.5–0.8 μm

4Final Polishing (Buffing Wheel + Compound)

Cotton or sisal buffing wheels charged with polishing compound (white/green bar). Achieves mirror finish Ra ≤ 0.2 μm. Final wipe with alcohol to remove compound residue.

Key Parameters
Target roughness: Ra ≤ 0.2 μm
Wheel: Cotton / sisal buff
Compound: White / green bar

⚠ Don't skip grits — every scratch shows under platingA missed 600-grit scratch is clearly visible under bright nickel or gold. Each grit transition must fully remove the previous scratch pattern. Cross-hatch technique (alternating direction per grit) is mandatory for quality lines.

FAQ

Everything operators ask about hand polishing

How many polishing steps do you really need for zipper sliders?
For standard quality: 3 steps (240 / 400 / buff). For luxury mirror finish: 5 steps (120 / 240 / 400 / 600 / buff). The extra fine-grit step is what separates commodity from premium.
Can hand polishing fix deep die-cast defects?
Surface pits up to 0.2 mm deep can be polished out. Deeper defects need weld repair or part rejection before polishing starts — inspect at rough-grind stage.
What is the right buffing wheel speed?
Cotton buffs: 1800–2200 RPM. Sisal (for cutting): 2400–2800 RPM. Too fast = burning the surface; too slow = no cut. Keep compound applied every 10–15 seconds.
How do you check Ra ≤ 0.2 μm on the line?
Contact profilometer for verification, but skilled operators use visual reflection: a clear mirror image of a fluorescent tube = Ra ≤ 0.2 μm. Any distortion = deeper scratches remain.
Is hand polishing cost-effective for large production runs?
For runs above 5000 pcs, hand polishing is too slow. We recommend barrel pre-polish then manual touch-up only on visible faces. The hybrid approach cuts cost 40% while keeping the premium look.

One-Stop Line Supply — Common Buyer Questions

Can you supply polishing compounds together with your plating lines — one supplier for everything?

Yes. QLQ supplies polishing paste, grinding compound and buffing compound alongside full plating lines, so your pre-treatment and plating chemistry are matched. See the turnkey line catalog.

Do polishing compounds work with both rack and barrel plating pre-treatment?

Yes. QLQ compounds are formulated per metal type and process — we specify the exact compound and buffing wheel combination for your products during line design.

Can we order chemicals and compounds separately from equipment?

Yes. Ongoing chemical and compound supply is available standalone, with the same technical support as turnkey customers.
