What it is and what it does. Hydrogen peroxide is the oxidising agent used to break down cyanide wastes, to oxidise organic contamination in cleaning baths and to brighten and etch some metal surfaces.
- Colourless liquid, normally supplied at 27.5% or 50%; it decomposes to water and oxygen, leaving no salt residue.
- In cyanide destruction it works with hypochlorite or alone at a controlled pH to oxidise cyanide to cyanate.
- Decomposition is accelerated by heat, metals and alkalis, so it is stored cool and in vented containers.
