What it is and what it does. Formaldehyde (formalin, 37%) is the reducing agent of electroless copper plating and a component of some electroless silver systems.
- Colourless clear liquid with a pungent odour; supplied as a 37% aqueous solution, often with a small amount of methanol as stabiliser.
- In electroless copper it reduces the copper complex to metallic copper on the activated surface.
- It is a carcinogen and a sensitiser, so it requires effective ventilation and monitoring.
