Scope of this guide
Senior version: the fix set with parameter windows, boundary cases and the discipline that keeps them fixed.
Series: finishing.com recurring questions answered with platingclub line practice. Parameters are industry-standard starting ranges — confirm against your supplier TDS.
Triage: symptom → confirm → first move
| Symptom | Likely root | Confirm by | First move |
|---|---|---|---|
| Oily films after cleaning | Concentration low or cold bath | Titration + thermometer | Rebalance to card range |
| Etched or dullened parts | Concentration too high / too hot | Weight-loss check | Dilute; verify card |
| Cleaning slow all day | Bath exhausted by oil load | Titration trend | Dump on trend, add overflow |
| Fumes/boiling at tank edge | Temperature over spec | Thermostat check | Cut heat; verify control |
| Stains after drying | Rinse drag-out from cleaner | Rinse conductivity | Counter-flow rinse audit |
The fix set
- Fix 1 — the card window — Alkaline soak typically 40–60 g/L at 55–70 °C for steel; card per alloy — brass and zinc run milder
- Fix 2 — titration 2× per shift — Additions by titration, not by scoop; log every result
- Fix 3 — temperature discipline — Thermostat + visible thermometer; 'feels hot' is not 60 °C
- Fix 4 — oil management — Skim daily; overflow strips floating oil; oil load dictates dump timing
- Fix 5 — time by soil — Heavy stamping oil needs soak time, not stronger chemistry; add agitation
Case method
A line fought adhesion failures 'randomly' for months. The cleaner ran 15 g/L under card and 8 °C cold — titration had drifted to weekly. Restoring the window and 2× per shift titration ended the failures within two weeks. (Method illustration: your own titration history will show the drift.)
Engineer notes
- One variable per corrective action; verify with the confirm-by column.
- Records beat memory: log every trial on the tank card.
- Two failed actions in a row is a senior call — escalate with your log.
Safety: hot caustic cleaners burn skin and eyes badly. Face shield and apron at addition, add chemicals to water, stir-in fully before loading parts.
FAQ
Dump decision — what rule do you run?
Titration trend: when additions stop holding range, dump; calendar dumping wastes chemistry.
Design a cleaning card for a new alloy?
Start mild, verify by water-break + weight-loss, then tighten to the minimum window that passes.
Agitation — worth the plumbing?
Yes for heavy oil: movement halves soak time at the same chemistry.
