🌰 Part I: Dry Media Selection (The Carriers)

The choice of media depends on the density of the wood and the shape of your product.

1 Walnut Shell Grit (The Cutter)

Material: Crushed Walnut Shells.

Hardness: Hard and dense.

Function: Cutting & Leveling. It removes the die-cast skin and minor scratches.

Grit Selection:

Coarse (8-12 Mesh): For heavy deburring.

Medium (16-20 Mesh): Standard for zipper pulls.

Fine (30 Mesh): For detailed logos to avoid lodging.

2 Corn Cob Grit (The Polisher)

Material: Crushed Corn Cobs.

Hardness: Soft and absorbent.

Function: Final Mirror Finish. It holds the fine polishing paste and wipes the metal clean.

Grit Selection:

[QLQ] Premium Cob (16-20 Mesh): The standard for high gloss.

Dust-Free Grade: Essential to prevent dust from packing into the zipper holes.

3 Bamboo Cubes / Wooden Pegs

Material: Hardwood or Bamboo diamonds.

Function: Used for heavy parts to prevent impingement (denting). They act as spacers.


🧴 Part II: The Chemical Agents (The Pastes)

Dry media alone does nothing. You must "charge" the media with [QLQ] Polishing Compounds.

1 [QLQ] Dry Cutting Cream (White/Grey)

Base: Aluminum Oxide + Stearic Acid.

Application: Mixed with Walnut Shell.

Goal: Removes the "Orange Peel" from the Zinc casting.

2 [QLQ] Mirror Paste (Blue/Green)

Base: Chromium Oxide + High-Temp Grease.

Application: Mixed with Corn Cob.

Goal: Creates the "Black Mirror" deep reflection.

3 [QLQ] Media Rejuvenator Oil

Application: Added when the media gets too dry or dusty. It restores the "stickiness" of the paste to the shell.


⚙️ Part III: Equipment & Process Workflow

Machine Type: Centrifugal Barrel Finisher (High Speed)

Do not use a standard rotary tumbler (Octagonal drum) for Zinc unless you have 24 hours to wait. Use a Centrifugal Machine (Planetary Motion).

G-Force: Generates 10G - 15G force.

Speed: Polishes in 1-2 hours instead of 20 hours.

Step 1: The Dry Grind (Leveling)

Media: Walnut Shell (Medium).

Compound: [QLQ] Dry Cutting Cream.

Ratio: 1 Part Zinc : 4 Parts Media.

Time: 60 – 90 Minutes.

Temperature: The barrel will get hot (50°C-60°C). This is normal. The heat helps the paste flow.

Step 2: The Dry Polish (Mirror)

Media: Corn Cob Grit.

Compound: [QLQ] Mirror Paste.

Ratio: 1 Part Zinc : 5 Parts Media. (Higher media ratio protects the shine).

Time: 30 – 45 Minutes.

Result: Parts come out looking like Chrome Plated, even before plating.


👨‍🍳 Part IV: The Master's "Recipe" (Ratios & Operations)

1 New Media Break-In (The "Pre-Charge")

The Mistake: Pouring fresh walnut shell and parts into the machine immediately.

The Consequence: The dry shell scratches the zinc.

The Master's Fix:

Run the new media Empty (no parts) with [QLQ] Compound for 2 hours.

Dosage: 3% - 5% of Media Weight.

This coats every grain of walnut with a layer of grease/abrasive. The media should feel "Damp" but not sticky.

2 Daily Re-Charging

Frequency: Every 2-3 Batches.

Dosage: Add small amount of [QLQ] Compound (approx 0.5% of weight).

Visual Check: Grab a handful of corn cob. Squeeze it.

Good: It clumps slightly then falls apart.

Too Dry: It creates dust. (Add Compound or Oil).

Too Wet: It sticks to your hand like mud. (Run with no parts or add fresh media).

3 Temperature Control

Ideal Temp: 40°C – 60°C.

Cold: The paste is hard and scratches.

Hot (>70°C): The Zinc alloy might darken, and the corn cob might burn/char.

Tip: If the machine is cold in the morning, run it empty for 15 mins to warm up the friction.


🛑 Part V: Troubleshooting & Maintenance

Defect: "Orange Peel" Texture

Cause: The Cutting Step (Walnut) was too short. You polished the bumps instead of flattening them.

Fix: Increase Step 1 time. Ensure Walnut Shell is not worn out (round and smooth).

Defect: Media Lodging

Cause: Media size matches the zipper pull hole.

Fix: Switch to a mix of sizes (e.g., 70% Medium + 30% Fine) or change Mesh size completely. Use [QLQ] Anti-Lodging Separator screens.

Defect: Dull Film / Haze

Cause: Media is "Dead" (Saturated with metal dust and old grease).

Fix:

Quick Fix: Run the media with [QLQ] Corn Cob (plain) to absorb the dirt.

Real Fix: Replace the media. Walnut lasts ~200 hours. Corn Cob lasts ~100 hours.

Defect: Parts turning Black

Cause: Overheating or too much compound.

Fix: Check ventilation of the machine. Add fresh, clean corn cob to dilute the mix.


💡 Part VI: Master's Efficiency Secrets

1 The "Dedicated Barrel" Rule

Never mix the barrels.

Mark Barrel A: "Cutting Only" (Walnut).

Mark Barrel B: "Polishing Only" (Corn Cob).

If you put Corn Cob in a dirty Walnut barrel, the Corn Cob gets contaminated instantly and will scratch your mirror finish.

2 The "Dust Extraction" System

Dry polishing creates dust.

Install a vacuum extraction line on the sorting machine.

Why? Dust on the part = Pitting in the plating tank. The parts must be 100% dust-free before entering the plating line.

3 The "Warm Transfer"

Do not let parts cool down between Step 1 and Step 2.

Transfer the hot parts directly from Walnut to Corn Cob.

The residual heat helps the polishing paste work immediately.
