What it is and what it does. Bleaching powder (calcium hypochlorite) is the oxidising agent used to break down cyanide wastes, to oxidise organic contaminants in cleaning baths and to disinfect effluent and cooling water.
- White to grey-white powder with a strong chlorine odour; the available chlorine is normally 30-35%.
- In the cyanide destruction stage it oxidises cyanide to cyanate, the first step of alkaline chlorination.
- It is a strong oxidiser and must never be mixed with acids, reducing agents or organic material.
