Why Barrel Post-Treatment Matters

Plating gives the finish — post-treatment decides how it survives shipping, storage and the customer's first inspection

Unload → Clean → Seal

DI rinse, passivation, anti-tarnish

Centrifugal Drying

Fast water removal, 600-1200 rpm

Vibratory Drying

Bulk drying, 60-80 °C, no water spots

Anti-Oxidation Packaging

VCI + desiccant + anti-tarnish paper

Barrel vs Rack — Post-Treatment Comparison

Barrel Post-Treatment — Process Steps

From barrel to box — 6-step mass finishing system

1Barrel Unloading & Collection

Tip the barrel contents into a collection bin or onto a vibratory feeder. For delicate parts, use a soft-drop chute to prevent mechanical damage.

Key Parameters
Unloading method: Tip barrel / bottom-door barrel
Collection: Vibratory feeder or plastic bin
Delicate parts: Soft-drop chute + rubber liner

2DI Water Rinse & Passivation

Bulk rinse in DI water bath, then passivation dip. For barrel parts, a mesh basket allows batch dipping. Trivalent chrome passivation for nickel, organic inhibitor for gold/copper.

Key Parameters
DI rinse: < 10 μS/cm, 2-3 dips
Passivation time: 30-60 s
Passivation type: Cr³⁺ / organic / chromate

3Centrifugal De-watering

High-speed centrifuge (600-1200 rpm) spins water off parts. Critical for barrel parts that have nested shapes (water trapped in recesses causes spotting).

Key Parameters
Speed: 600-1200 rpm
Time: 3-5 min
Capacity: 50-100 kg per batch
Effect: Surface moisture < 1%
Zinc alloy parts before surface finishingBefore
Finished zinc alloy parts after surface finishingAfter

4Vibratory Drying (60-80 °C)

Vibratory hot air dryer — parts travel on vibrating deck through heated chamber. Heated air at 60-80 °C with adjustable dwell time. Prevents water spots and accelerates passivation cure.

Key Parameters
Temperature: 60-80 °C
Dwell time: 10-20 min
Air flow: Forced hot air circulation
Capacity: Continuous: 200-500 kg/h

5Sorting & Inspection

Vibratory sorting table + visual inspection. Magnetic separator removes ferrous debris. Operators visually inspect for rejects (color mismatch, pitting, scratches).

Key Parameters
Sorting method: Vibratory feeder + belt
Reject rate target: < 5%
Inspection: Random sample 10% per batch

6Anti-Oxidation Packaging

VCI (Vapor Corrosion Inhibitor) bags + desiccant + anti-tarnish paper. For gold/rose gold: anti-tarnish tissue. For nickel: VCI bags. For antique: anti-scratch tissue interleave.

Key Parameters
Standard packaging: VCI bag + 5g desiccant
Premium (gold/color): Anti-tarnish paper + VCI + desiccant
Shelf life (standard): 12 months (sealed VCI)
Shelf life (premium): 24 months

⚠ Water spots are the #1 post-treatment defect in barrel platingBarrel parts have more recesses, blind holes and nested geometries than rack parts. Water trapped in these areas during drying creates spots, stains and eventually corrosion. Three defenses: (1) centrifuge at 1000+ rpm for 5 min minimum, (2) follow with vibratory hot air at 70-80 °C, (3) use DI water (not tap) for final rinse. For parts with deep blind holes, add a compressed air blow-off station between centrifuge and dryer.

FAQ

Can barrel parts be e-coated after plating?
Yes — our barrel-friendly e-coat line accepts bulk parts in mesh baskets. The e-coat process (dip, rinse, cure) is batch-compatible. Barrel parts need careful handling to avoid scratching during e-coat before cure.
How do I prevent parts from sticking together during centrifugal drying?
Add 1-2% anti-static agent in the final rinse. For parts with high surface finish (mirror Ni), stagger the centrifuge load with a handful of soft plastic chips. Never overload the centrifuge — max 70% fill.
What packaging is best for overseas shipment?
Tier 1: VCI bag + desiccant + individual layer cardboard separators. Tier 2: vacuum-sealed VCI bag. Tier 3: anti-tarnish paper wrap + VCI + sealed bag + desiccant + outer carton. For sea freight (high humidity, 4-8 weeks transit), use Tier 2 or 3.
How long can barrel parts sit before packaging?
Immediately after vibratory drying, parts should be passivated and packaged within 2 hours. Exposure to factory air (humidity 40-70%, temperature 20-30 °C) starts the tarnish process. Gold and passivated nickel can sit 4-8 hours; unpassivated nickel starts spotting in 2-4 hours.
Do you offer 'ready-to-assemble' packaging?
Yes — we can bag, tag and label per your kit requirements. Options: zip-lock bags per set, heat-sealed PE bags, anti-static bags for electronics, or bulk VCI bags with batch label. Tell us the packaging spec and we integrate it into the post-treatment SOP.
