Scope of this guide
This senior guide covers the hard cases: combined variables, boundary conditions and the judgement calls that separate consistent lines from lucky ones.
Process: Dewaxing & Wax Removal. Figures in this guide are industry-standard starting ranges; confirm against your supplier TDS before locking settings.
Working ranges and control points
The table below is the daily reference for a wax removal line. Set by the card, verify by the control point column.
| Parameter | Typical range | Control point | Watch out |
|---|---|---|---|
| Emulsion temperature | 70–85 °C | Thermostat per tank | Cold emulsion re-deposits wax |
| Soak time | 5–15 min | Visual no wax film | Under-soak hides residue |
| Emulsion concentration | 3–8% by volume | Titration per shift | Weak bath floats wax back |
| Ultrasonic assist | Optional 25–40 kHz | Cavitation visible | Over-time etches fine faces |
| Post rinse | 60 °C clean water | Sheet rinse, no beads | Wax re-deposits in cold rinse |
Push The Boundary: the senior view
Beyond the basic card, this is the layer that matters at your level:
| Hard case | Why it is hard | Method | Data to keep |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mixed-alloy loads | Different windows collide | Split by family or map positions | Per-family thickness trend |
| Seasonal humidity swings | Flash and dry times move | Season-set viscosities | Monthly setting log |
| Recesses at spec limit | Throwing power ceiling | Auxiliary anode trials | Before/after thickness maps |
| Repeat claim from one customer | Use conditions differ | Reproduce their test | Claim-vs-lab correlation |
Standard routine
- Pre-drain parts to keep wax out of the emulsion
- Hold parts fully submerged through soak
- Agitate gently; verify no wax film at lift
- Hot rinse immediately after soak
- Inspect under side-light before release to plating
Engineer notes
- Wax redeposits when rinse water is cold — keep it hot
- Skim floating wax between shifts, or it coats lifted parts
- Blind holes hold wax — ultrasonic assist or drill-clear and re-soak
- Emulsion life shortens with heavy wax loads; log additions
- Adhesion failures trace to wax more often than to oil
Safety: Hot emulsion and steam scald. Face shield and apron at lift; lid tanks when agitating.
FAQ
How do I confirm wax is fully gone?
Side-light inspection plus water-break test; wax beads water where it remains.
Why does wax come back after rinsing?
Cold rinse redeposits emulsified wax. Keep rinse at 60 °C and skim the tank.
What soaks wax out of blind holes?
Ultrasonic emulsion or a targeted solvent pre-soak, then the standard line.
How do I train juniors on this judgement?
Have them log the variable they changed and the measured result; review the log weekly against line outcomes.
