What it is and what it does. Sodium silicate (water glass) is used as a corrosion inhibitor and builder in alkaline cleaners and as the silicate seal that blocks porosity after anodising and after zinc plating.
- Supplied as a viscous liquid with a modulus of 2.2-2.6; the modulus controls the film-forming behaviour.
- In cleaners a small amount inhibits attack on aluminium and zinc during high-pH cleaning.
- As a seal it reduces porosity and improves the corrosion performance of the coating.
