What it is and what it does. Phenol is a raw material and a component in some plating and surface-treatment formulations, notably in the preparation of certain organic additives and as a preservative in water-based systems.
- Colourless to pink crystalline solid that melts at about 41 C; it is corrosive, toxic and absorbed rapidly through the skin.
- Used in the manufacture of organic additives, in some electroless formulations and in the preparation of resorcinol and other intermediates.
- It is a serious skin hazard - the burns are severe and the absorption can be fatal.
