What it is and what it does. Glacial acetic acid is used as a pH buffer and mild acid in nickel and zinc baths, and as the acid component of acetate-based make-up systems.
- 99.8% colourless liquid with a pungent odour; the freezing point is about 17 C, so it can solidify in an unheated store.
- In nickel baths a small amount acts with the boric acid as part of the buffer system.
- It is flammable, with a flash point of about 39 C, and corrosive in concentrated form.
